Deep Groove vs Angular Contact

Compare deep groove and angular contact bearings: load capacity, speed, contact angle, and when to use each.

Deep groove ball bearings and angular contact ball bearings look similar but serve different purposes.

Deep Groove Ball Bearings

  • Single row, Conrad-type assembly.
  • Handle primarily radial loads with moderate axial capacity in both directions.
  • Higher speed capability than angular contact.
  • Most common: 6200, 6300 series for electric motors, pumps, fans.
  • Lower cost, wider availability.

Angular Contact Ball Bearings

  • Raceways designed with a contact angle (15deg, 25deg, or 40deg).
  • Handle combined radial and axial loads; axial capacity in one direction only.
  • Often used in matched pairs (back-to-back, face-to-face, or tandem).
  • Common: 7200, 7300 series for machine tool spindles, high-speed pumps.
  • Higher precision grades available (P5, P4).
